PTP puts Malaysia's first electric prime movers into service
Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has commissioned the first 21 of 52 electric prime movers for terminal container moves — a local benchmark for fleet electrification, not a new haulier requirement.

Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has commissioned Malaysia's first operational electric prime movers for container-terminal use, putting the first 21 units of an eventual 52-unit fleet into service on 11 August 2026.
What PTP has deployed
The 21 electric prime movers support horizontal container movements within the terminal. PTP ordered 52 units in total in December 2025; the remaining 31 are scheduled for delivery in batches through the end of September 2026. The units are manufactured locally by Terberg Tractors Malaysia in Pasir Gudang, Johor.
The economics, from PTP's own trial
In an earlier proof-of-concept, PTP recorded 48% lower monthly carbon emissions and 57% lower monthly operating costs per electric unit compared with a conventional prime mover. These figures come from PTP's own trial and should not be assumed to transfer directly to external road-haulage trucks or different operating environments.
What this does not change
This is terminal-internal equipment used for moving containers within PTP. It does not introduce a new electric-vehicle requirement for external road hauliers collecting or delivering at PTP. For West Malaysian logistics operators, it is primarily a useful local benchmark for fleet-electrification economics, and part of PTP's wider expansion programme targeting 16.3 million TEU of annual handling capacity by 2029.
